Get to know us - Rassamee Hayes

Hello there! My name is Rassamee (pronounced “Raw-sah-me”) Hayes and I’m the Literacy/English Language Development Coach for Ruby. I am originally from Tacoma, WA. After graduating from high school, I joined AmeriCorps for a year and traveled throughout California and Arizona doing national service projects. I went on to get my Bachelors in Special Education and Elementary Education from Western Washington University. Later, I received my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Seattle University. I taught in Seattle and Oakland before making the move to Alameda Unified. Over the years, I’ve taught grades K-8 and mentored high school youth as well. I was a founding teacher at Vincent Academy in West Oakland and also a founding member of the Hidden Genius Project, an Oakland nonprofit that mentors African American male youth and teaches them tech and business skills. I live with my husband, young son, and sister in law in Oakland. My husband and I are also expecting our second child in December 2017! When I am not coaching and learning at Ruby, I enjoy traveling, baking pies, meeting friends for coffee, and exploring the Bay Area with my family.
