Get to know us - Janet Balsiger

Hello! I am Janet Balsiger, one of the Literacy/English Language Development Coaches at Ruby Bridges.  I was born and raised here in the Bay Area, and am now pleased to call Alameda my home.  After graduating from high school, I received my Bachelors in Psychology and Social Welfare from UC Berkeley.  I taught Pre-Kindergarten for a few years in a private school, and then went on to get my teaching credential from San Francisco State University.  I was a classroom teacher for over fifteen years in grades 1st-5th.  During that time I had a wonderful opportunity to teach overseas for a couple of years, and that fueled my interest in learning about other cultures.  When I returned to the U.S., I began mentoring International students through a non-profit organization and loved it so much I decided to go back and get my Masters in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).  After graduating from the program in 2008, I went on to teach English Language Learners in middle school for several years before coming to Ruby Bridges as an English Language Development teacher in 2011.  I am so thankful to be a part of the diverse and dedicated community we have here at Ruby!  When I am not busy with my coaching responsibilities, I enjoy running, cycling, cooking (especially with produce from the Farmer’s Market), spending time with family, and hanging out in coffee shops with good friends.
